Having an A1 certificate is essential when providing work abroad. This document confirms which social security legislation the employed person is subject to and where insurance contributions are therefore paid. The A1 certificate is valid throughout the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
This is crucial when, for example, employees are on business trips abroad. The length of the employee’s stay in another country as part of his/her work duties is irrelevant here. Even a one-day trip requires the employee to have an A1 certificate!
1. What happens if an employee does not have an A1 certificate when travelling abroad?
The consequences of not having an A1 document may be very different, depending on the employee’s country of residence. As a result, a fine may be imposed on the employer or employee, or the controlling state may require the employer to pay insurance contributions for the period of the employee’s stay in another country.
